Wind Whistle
Fever on the water and in the falling sky too,
wild fire on the island spreading it, letting it loose.
You can't see or touch it but you can know it's at hand
when you tremble for no reason as the breeze pricks your skin.
Any of you that have ears, don't you hear
a voice in the distance calling you oh so clear!
The fire burns inside a stone that glows in the dark,
burning forever and you never see the sparks
that are poisoning the rivers and poisoning the air
but the wind answers back in a hush and a prayer.
Any of you that have ears...
You can't trace that fever as it creeps in unknown
through streets and buildings, in places high and low
but hidden just inside the noises of the day
the word of its coming breathes in a gentle sway.
Any of you that have ears...
Numbers on the papers say it can't do any harm
but something inside you says they could be wrong
and all the sing-song speeches ring hollow in the face
of the unspoken message the wind carries in its wave.
Any of you that have ears...
Splitting hairs and riddles at this half-past late hour,
weighing in the balance as to who's got the power.
When thieves rob your pockets to light the fire in the hole,
do you stop what they're doing or just let the fuse go?
Any of you that have ears...
