Aces and Eights

Through the swinging doors you stumble

to a smoky room of color and noise.

Danger lies face down on the table.

If you want to play, then you've got no choice.

When you draw those aces and eights

you've got a meeting that won't wait.

If you've got something left to do, it's too late.

Should you hold on to red aces?

Take one more drink and think about that.

Remember a few of the faces.

All the number cards blur in your head.

Dealing with the feelings and the queens you threw away

trying for the high cards and the scenes that you played.

Trouble with the shuffle, it seems to be swayed

by an unseen hand someplace.
