Didn't Know the Way
The street we walked could have been gold
until it crumbled into dust
bending beneath a twisted oak.
We stopped to talk where it was.
When I walked with you there
on that cloudy April day
I was just going nowhere
and I didn't know the way.
I had travelled many miles
to see you smiling back at me
but you didn't want to smile
and it was hard for you to speak.
There was something in the air --
something you had to say
and I was just going nowhere
and I didn't know the way.
So then you told me about him
and how you'd kind-of changed your mind
and I had to travel once again
to leave that place and you behind.
And I didn't know, didn't care.
The road signs all passed in a haze
because I was just going nowhere
and I didn't know the way.
The fortune teller reads my hand
as if she'd like to read my mind.
Still she can tell the things she can
just by the blue that's in my eyes.
And though she's trying not to stare
and give herself away,
she knows I'm going nowhere
and I still don't know the way.
