Our Lady of Liberty
New York, New York,
I saw those towers burning black smoke.
There were sirens crying,
people running in the street below.
And when those towers fell down
the island fell under a very dark cloud.
But our lady of liberty still stands in the harbor,
stands with a torch in her hand
and the torch still shines a light
through the longest, darkest night.
New York, New York,
the flags all flying red, white and blue,
curling, unfurling,
over the caskets of brown passing through.
These sad processions go 'round
past pictures of the missing -- most were never found.
But our lady of liberty still stands...
New York, New York,
the workmen dig through the smoking gray ash.
They search the ruins
to find a small piece of the past --
a piece of a life lived before,
before this fire, before this dark holy war.
But our lady of liberty still stands...
