You Can Ride
The first set of words here come from the latest version of the song, which appears on Dave's December 2023 CD Rock Ave.
Going down to the station
underground for a conveyance
to get around to your destination.
You can ride and go your way
in the middle of the night or the day.
You might go fast or slow but you will get someplace.
Sometimes the train can roll quickly
through the veins of the city
and other times, things can get tricky
but you can ride...
You might see a lot of advertisements,
you might hear the talk from one of the pilots,
but you will not ever hear silence.
You can ride...
When you get around to going places
you might see a crowd of moving faces
including some who know how to play their aces.
You can ride...
Four-letter scrawls are the handwriting
on the walls that you keep sighting
and they can all seem a bit enlightening.
You can ride and go your way
in the middle of the night or the day.
You might go fast or slow but you will get someplace,
no matter what the pace.
The words below match the ones Dave used in the rough cut video that he posted on YouTube on 10/10/09 - click here to watch that video.
Going down to the station.
Underground destination
down in a crowd of strangers' faces.
You can ride the night away
and never see the light of day.
You can go anywhere but you can't escape.
Take the train rolling heavy
through the veins of the city --
signs so plain, girls so pretty.
You can ride...
Broken glass on the pavement
and some flash advertisements,
whine and crash, and then silence.
You can ride...
Watch how you walk through this concrete jungle --
don't you get caught in some dirt cheap trouble
and don't get lost in that wild card shuffle.
You can ride...
Read the fine four-letter scrawl --
the handwriting on the wall,
the high price of love for sale.
You can ride...
